Living with wood and concrete

The demand for single-family homes, which is continually rising in urban areas as well, has up to now mostly been met by building homes in the style of row houses. Spreading along multiple lines, these rows of single buildings, offer only limited spatial opportunities for urban development However, hardly any other alternative solutions to high-density detached or semi-detached houses are to be found in Northern Europe.

Around 1990 Carl Pruscha was one of the first to propose such an alternative with his atrium houses in Traviatagasse in Vienna. What makes this concept unique is that it combines a clearly structured urbanistic order with the possibility to adapt the interior work according to the individual customer’s wishes. The concept is also distinguished by its ecologically sustainable use of the thermal mass of the walls and the use of wood, an easily renewable material, which is economically worthwhile in our region in particular.

The aim of the departure-funded project “Living with wood and concrete” is to keep up work and research into the basic concept of walls built with a massive frame and flexible, easily adaptable components made of wood. The capable team that is about to establish the enterprise HABITAT is made up of the experienced architects Carl Pruscha and Franz J. Loranzi and the young winner of the Roland Rainer Prize 2007, Julia Nuler.
